Attended the classes. Cleared the semesters. Sat for the campus drive in a shirt you ironed the night before. Applied to sixty companies on Naukri. Sent connection requests to HR managers who never replied.
And here you are, eight months out, still explaining to relatives that "it's taking time."
Let's be honest about something first: this is not a referendum on your intelligence. It's not karma, it's not your college's tier, and it's not because you didn't pray hard enough. There are specific, identifiable, fixable reasons freshers get filtered out — and almost nobody sits you down and names them.
So let's name them.
First, the Uncomfortable Context
The India Skills Report 2026 — based on over one lakh candidate assessments by ETS with CII, AICTE and AIU — put overall employability at 56.35%. For engineering graduates it sits around 70%, and for computer science graduates near 80%.

Reason 1: Your Resume Never Reached a Human
Most freshers assume rejection means someone read their CV and said no. Usually nobody read it at all.
Large employers run applicant tracking systems that filter on keywords before a recruiter sees anything. A CV that says "worked on data-related work" gets discarded; one that says "Python, Pandas, SQL, scikit-learn" survives. Not because the second candidate is better — because the second CV is machine-readable.
The fix:
- Mirror the exact vocabulary of the job description. If it says "SQL," write SQL, not "database querying."
- One page. Single column. No tables, no photo, no graphic skill bars — parsers mangle all of these.
- Lead with skills and projects, not with your school marks.

A certificate proves you finished a video series. A project proves you can solve a problem when the tutorial ends. Only one of those is what the job consists of.
The fix: Build three to five things that run. Something that ingests messy real data, does something useful, and can be demonstrated in a browser. Put every one on GitHub with a README that explains the problem, your approach, and what broke.
Reason 3: You Applied Broadly Instead of Deeply
Sixty applications with the same CV feels productive. It's the least effective thing you can do.
A generic CV sent to sixty companies is optimised for none of them. Meanwhile the candidate who sent eight tailored applications — each one rewritten against the job description, each with a two-line note about why that company specifically — is getting three interviews.
The fix: Cut your volume by 80% and raise your effort per application by 500%. Eight serious applications a week beats sixty lazy ones. Every time.
Reason 4: You Can Code, But You Can't Explain
Indian technical education optimises for the written answer. Interviews optimise for the spoken one.
We regularly meet students who genuinely understand a concept but freeze when asked to explain it out loud in English for ninety seconds. The interviewer has no window into your head. All they have is what you say. If you can't articulate it, from their side it doesn't exist.
The fix:
- Explain every project you build out loud, to a wall, in under two minutes. Record it. Watch it. It'll be painful the first four times.
- Practise the three standard follow-ups: Why did you choose that approach? What would you do differently? What was the hardest part?
- Do mock interviews with someone who will actually interrupt you.
Communication isn't a soft extra here. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists analytical thinking, resilience and communication-adjacent skills alongside AI and big data among the capabilities employers rank most highly.
Reason 5: Your Skills Match a Shrinking Market
Some freshers do everything right — and target roles that are quietly contracting.
The WEF's 2025 data projected sharp declines in clerical and routine administrative roles, while big data specialists, AI and machine learning specialists, and fintech engineers topped the fastest-growing list. In India, the NASSCOM community reports that while more than 90% of early-career tech professionals now use AI tools, only about 23% qualify as "AI-native" engineers who can independently build and deploy AI systems.
Read that again. Ninety percent use the tools. Twenty-three percent can build with them. That 67-point gap is the entire opportunity.
The fix: Reposition toward where demand is growing — start with foundational IT skills, then narrow to the AI skills currently in demand.
Reason 6: You Have No Network, and You Think That's Fine
A large share of roles get filled before they're ever advertised. Not through corruption — through convenience. When a manager needs someone, asking the team "know anyone?" is faster than posting a listing.
If nobody in the industry knows your name, you are only competing for the leftover roles that reached a public job board.
The fix:
- Write about what you're learning on LinkedIn. Once a week. Even short posts.
- Message alumni from your college who work where you want to work. Ask for fifteen minutes of advice, not a job. Most people say yes to advice.
- Attend meetups. Chennai's OMR corridor has an active tech community and most events are free.
- Contribute to one open-source project, however small.
Reason 7: Nobody Taught You What Six Months of Rejection Does
This one isn't about skills at all.
By month four, most freshers have quietly stopped believing an offer is coming. They still apply — but the applications get sloppier, the preparation thins out, and the interview energy is flat. The rejection starts causing the rejection.
The fix: Change what you measure. Stop tracking offers, which you don't control. Track applications sent, projects shipped, hours studied, mock interviews done. Those you do control, and progress on them is visible weekly. It keeps momentum alive long enough for the outcome to catch up.
And genuinely — talk to someone. A senior, a mentor, a friend who's been through it. Isolation makes an ordinary job search feel like a verdict on your worth. It isn't one.
A Realistic 90-Day Correction Plan
- Weeks 1–2: Rebuild CV, LinkedIn and GitHub. Pick one target role. Outcome: an ATS-safe one-page CV and a clear positioning statement.
- Weeks 3–6: Close the skill gap — Python and SQL to a working level. Outcome: able to write and debug without a tutorial open.
- Weeks 7–10: Build two real projects on messy data. Outcome: two deployed projects with proper READMEs.
- Weeks 11–12: Applications, mock interviews and outreach. Outcome: 8 tailored applications a week, 6 mock interviews, 15 alumni conversations.
Ninety days is not a long time. It is, however, longer than most people spend before deciding the market is against them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Blaming your college tier. It matters at exactly one moment — the campus drive — and stops mattering the second you have a portfolio.
Waiting for "the market to improve." The market did not reject you; a filter did. Filters are things you can pass.
Preparing endlessly without applying. You cannot fully prepare for an interview you haven't attended. Interviews are preparation.
Taking any job "just to start." A little discernment is fine — but eighteen months of nothing is worse than twelve months in an adjacent role that funds your upskilling. Movement beats stasis.
Hiding the gap. Recruiters are far more comfortable with "I spent eight months building skills, here's what I built" than with a vague, defensive silence.
Treating rejection as data about you. It's data about a match. Different thing entirely.
